5 Podcasts To Listen To Now
Podcasts are more popular now than ever, despite having been around for ages. If getting into a new podcast seems overwhelming, look no further. Here are five that will inspire you to go out in the world and kick all of the ass.
Call Your Girlfriend
All good things come from Gossip Girl #fact. The hosts of CYG, Anne Friedman and Aminatou Sow met at a GG viewing party and quickly became friends. Just like many of us, their friendship turned into a long-distance one as their careers took off. With a little help from their mutual friend (now producer) Call Your Girlfriend was born. Aminatou Sow was part of Forbes top 30 under 30 list in 2014! Anne Friedman’s professional portfolio is awe inspiring. This podcast is so wonderful because each and every one of us has a long-distance bestie. Listening to Sow and Friedman talk is quite like hanging out with two of your bffs. Interestingly enough, in 2015 Ivanka Trump named CYG one of her favorite podcasts. No, but really. Give CYG a listen. They are currently touring and will be making an appearance at the upcoming Philadelphia Podcast Festival, get your tickets here.
Stuff Mom Never Told You
This dynamic podcast digs into the challenges that women face every day and offers creative solutions to assist in overcoming professional, personal and political obstacles. Rather than publish an episode once a week, Stuff Mom Didn’t Tell You publishes twice! Cohosts Bridget Todd) and Emilie Aries took over for the original co-hosts Cristen Conger and Caroline Ervin earlier this year and hit the ground running. Todd and Aries have already posted exciting, engaging content about making friends as an adult, benevolent sexism, and being a woman in the ‘Gig Economy’. This podcast raises the bar on making it easy to access additional resources for the working woman; Conger’s original blog entries are archived making it easy for any listener to access. Her essays range from African-American suffragists, Queens who battled relentlessly to rule their kingdoms, Patron Saint of Big Hair Dolly Parton, and more.
Stuff Your Mom Never Told You episodes can be accessed here.
2 Dope Queens/Sooo Many White Guys
If you haven’t heard of 2 Dope Queens, you’ve been living under a rock. This podcast is pure fire and it’s cohosts, former Daily Show correspondent and UCB alumJessica Williams and New York Times Best Selling author/Broad City consultant Phoebe Robinson, know it. 2 Dope Queens is a breath of fresh air when it comes to comedy podcasts. Most podcasts are hosted by white guys and don’t give opportunities for other comics to reach a new audience. Williams and Robinson changed all of that by recording their show live in Brooklyn. If you’re a comedy nerd or a fan of laughing in general these podcasts are for you. Robinson is now a friend of Bono and her podcast Sooo Many White Guys has taken on a life of its own.
RuPaul - What’s the Tee w/ Michelle Visage
EMMY. AWARD. WINNER RUPAUL HAS A PODCAST! Every episode is as fabulous as you would expect from Ru. Honey, pay attention because you don’t want to miss any shade from co-host and Ru’s long-term bff Michelle Visage, that’s all I’m saying. The podcast is more than just guest judge’s from Drag Race or former contestants from the show; it digs into the world of the notoriously private RuPaul. Ru and Michelle talk addiction, makeup, and spills all the tea. Most important, it allows the listener to get to know Michelle Visage and offers a glimpse into their friendship. Michelle drops great life advice in episode 80 (the guest is the singular Niecy Nash), “Always have a friend who is willing to beat the sh!t out of someone in the middle of the night for you.” Yaaas Michelle, yaaas! This podcast is a must for anyone who is a fan of the show, Untucked, DragCon, and all things fabulous.
All episodes of RuPaul’s – What’s the Tee with Michelle Visage can be streamed here.
Do you want a look into the world of makeup but are balling on a budget? Fat Mascara is there for you! Hosts Jessica Matlin and Jennifer Goldstein (who started her career in the beauty industry in West Philadelphia) have been lauded by Refinery29, PopSugar, Marie Claire for their innovative approach to all things beauty. They approach an industry best known for its vanity and bring on guests who are at the helm of the ever evolving scene. With less than 100 episodes available, binging Fat Mascara is easier than applying falsies for the first time. Episode topics range from Mercury Retrograde, pretty privilege (which is a very, very real thing), and how to choose a perfume that works for you; choose wisely because you will laugh off your non-waterproof mascara!
