A Conversation with Stephanie Thomas of Women Grow
As of April 17, 2016, Pennsylvania became a radically different place. Governor Wolf signed a bill giving many Pennsylvanians the ability to move forward with accessing cannabis for their debilitating pain, seizure and medical conditions. With the Governor increasing access to medical marijuana, it only made sense for Femme and Fortune to reach out to the Philadelphia chapter of Women Grow, a national organization which “… was created to connect, educate, inspire and empower the next generation of cannabis industry leaders by creating programs, community and vents for aspiring and current business executives…” Stephanie Thomas, Philadelphia’s Women Grow Chapter Chairwoman sat down with me to discuss Women Grow and the great work that this organization is doing to help “serve(s) as a catalyst for women to influence and succeed in the cannabis industry as the end of marijuana prohibition occurs on a national scale.”
Women Grow was founded in 2014 and Stephanie joined the team in 2015 after being approached by Jane West at a networking event. Being a part of Women Grow means that you have access to professional connections via their monthly meetings. Meeting Stephanie was a dream; she told me about the upcoming meeting, scheduled for June 2, 2016 with Brian Staffa, a cannabis production expert. This event, a Philadelphia Women Grow exclusive, gives women in the Philadelphia area a chance to have a one-on-one interaction with a member of the cannabis community and to hear about how their life experiences could help grow the cannabis community at a local level.
"Creativity is a critical part of Women Grow," said Thomas. "Each member brings a unique life perspective to the table and that is what helps grow our community as a whole." The “ingenuity” that Women Grow visionary leaders bring to the table is huge, a game changer, an industry trendsetter. After all, Jane West, founder of Women Grow, created a stylish line of ‘Take-A-Toke’ bags, sexy and perfect for the cannabis user on the go. West also changed the face of cannabis for women by introducing stunning jewelry such as the ‘Stoned Triangle’ for women who want to combine their love of cannabis with a sleek, minimalist statement piece.
"Creativity is a critical part of Women Grow."
West has not limited herself to just jewelry and bags; she has gone on to create Edible Events a “consumption-friendly” cannabis events company. Women lead the way in the cannabis industry with Women Grow at the helm! It is, after all, the industry’s largest professional networking organization.
Women Grow’s Philadelphia chapter is working with the community to help fundraise, reach out to the community and encourage conversations with women in Pennsylvania concerning pursuing their passion for cannabis and marrying that passion with the skills that they already have. Thomas had fantastic advice for women who are interested in getting involved; “attend Women Grow meetings, be creative, know your passions and remember that your life experience is valuable.” What fantastic, fabulous femmes at the helm of something so big!
