#30Over30PHL - Yasmine Mustafa

Today's #30Over30PHL feature is of a woman you've probably heard of if you're living here in Philadelphia. Yasmine Mustafa is one of the most inspiring women you'll meet for her amazing work ethic, ability to find voids in the community and creating solutions for them, and her non-stop hustle. Known for bringing Girl Develop It to Philadelphia, and most recently for her company ROAR For Good - a wearable tech company to empower women (!!). Read more about the amazing Yasmine below! Yasmine Mustafa | Femme & Fortune | 30 Over 30

Name: Yasmine Mustafa

Age: 33

1) What neighborhood in Philadelphia do you call home? Center City

2) Tell us about what you do professionally: Empowering women is what I love to do. I run a wearable tech startup aimed at diminishing attacks against women using fashionable safety jewelry and education called ROAR for Good. And I'm also the co-leader of Girl Develop It Philadelphia which provides low-cost, judgement-free classes for women to learn how to code.

3) What makes you happy? Inspiring others, being with my family (esp. my little nephew), being outdoors - whether it's biking around the city, hiking, or looking at the stars. I also loving hearing about/doing random acts of kindness.

4) Who inspires you and why? I can't help but root for the underdog. Anyone who has overcome adversity inspires and motivates me greatly.

5) What's your biggest regret and why? I don't believe in regrets - I've learned so much from every terrible experience I've had. If I can give my 18-year-old self advice, i'd be to learn that sooner :)

6) What is your life motto? I love the line "ask for forgiveness, not permission" because to me - it embodies how it feels to go against the status quo and it keeps my motivation up against the naysayers.

7) Name a guilty pleasure: I love dessert and chocolate so much, sometimes I have it before my meal.

8) On what occasion do you lie? I will tell white lies based on the truth when someone I care about is down.

9) What's in your purse right now? I don't carry a purse. In my pockets, I usually have my cell phone which has a case with my ID and a credit card. And of course, my keys. That's it.

10) What is your greatest extravagance? Pedicures. My sister got me into them a few years ago and I love the massage, the ticklish scrub, and when they make my toes all pretty.

11) Where is your favorite travel destination? I don't have a go-to destination. Because I live in the City, I love weekend getaways to go hiking or the suburbs. Sometimes I get a hankering to see the stars and the woods are a great place to watch how they dazzle the sky.

12) How do you take your coffee? With heavy cream and sugar.

13) What is your most treasured possession? I like to chronicle important milestones in my life with Instagram and a private journal so I can go back and relive the moments when I'm old and crippled.

14) What is your favorite magazine? Beautiful Magazine. It's a free digital magazine a friend runs that covers real issues and doesn't photoshop models - I love it.

15) What advice would you give your 20-something self? "Worry less about what other people think" "Life has its own plans, don't be so tied to the outcome. It's not like the movies. "Be kinder to yourself." "Learn not to regret things sooner."

16) Where can we find you on a Friday night? Home alone binging on Netflix after a long week or with a friend. I prefer intimate gatherings to the bar scene.

17) What motivates you? Changing the world and making a difference. As morbid as it sounds, I think about what I want people to say at my funeral and I want it to be something about making an impact in some way.

18) What's something unique that we can find on your desk or around your work-space? A picture of my nephew with Santa. It's the only personal thing I have at my desk and I love it.

19) What's the best relationship advice you've ever gotten? Don't make rash decisions when you're mad. There's usually a deeper meaning beyond what you're arguing about - find it. Listen to your partner and do little things to make them feel special every now and then.

20) What's your favorite thing about Philadelphia right now? The pop-up gardens in the Spring/Summer. I can't get enough of them.

21) If you could be any superhero, who would you be and why? I'd want to heal people from the wounds of their past so their futures aren't affected by it.

22) Do you have a fashion icon? I should, the fact that I don't explains why I look the way I do :)

23) If you could go back to one decade in history, which one would it be and why? Sometimes I feel bombarded by text messages, phone calls, Slack chats, IMs and I want to go back to a time when we're not constantly interrupted by technology.

24) Where's your favorite place to eat? So many to list! Fette Sau in NoLibs has great short ribs, I love Santucci's pizza, the fish tacos at El Vez are tasty, and I've always had great meals at Fork and Fond.

25) How do you stay sane balancing your life and career? I would feel like a hypocrite answering this question because I don't feel sane. My ambitions get in the way of my life and I'm still trying to figure this one out.

26) What's your favorite drink or cocktail? A nice glass of Malbec.

27) What is your favorite movie? The Shawshank Redemption is incredibly powerful.

28) Tell us about an embarrassing moment you recently had: I don't embarrass easily. When I think back, the only thing that comes to mind is when someone is too complimentary - I don't know what to say and change the subject.

29) What's your favorite app right now? Google Maps. I have zero sense of direction - none.

30) If you could, what would you say to yourself fives years from now? Find a work/life balance!
