Why Taking Care of YOU Is So Important
You might think it’s a no brainer. Take care of yourself, get a good night’s rest and eat well. It’s easy to fall off the wagon for a little bit, get lost, and jump back on again. Sometimes before we jump back on the wagon, we forget to take appropriate measures so we make sure we don’t fall off again. I know that I have been guilty of it time and time again. As a young entrepreneur, I understand how easy it is to neglect your mind and body. It’s a constant uphill battle to stay true to all of the things that give you inner peace, but when you stay true to it consistently for some time, it all falls into place.
I was 18 when I started my non-profit organization. As an over ambitious freshman in college, I was starting a business organization on campus, getting accustomed to college life, and was joining activities all over the place. The next year I decided to add another leadership position and a part-time job to my list of things to do. Meanwhile, I was dedicating a lot of time towards running my non-profit.
I was overworked and had to have my family tell me to “stop working so hard.” My crazy schedule and neglect to my mind and body happened in waves. I would get back on track, but then “fall off the wagon.”
It wasn’t until I went to an event at the company I used to work at, that I realized I couldn’t keep falling off the wagon. At the event, Sue Weldon, founder of Unite for Her shared her miraculous story of being diagnosed with breast cancer, recovering, and spreading her story of wellness to recovery to hundreds of women. As entrepreneurs we sometimes stop investing in our most effective business tool-- ourselves.
In light of October as the month for National Breast Cancer, I think it is important to stress the importance of treating our mind and bodies as a temple. Protecting ourselves from the noise around us can be hard to do it, but it is one of the most important things we can do.
When I’m crazy and losing my mind, my dad will say “Rina, you are the 1993 model. There is no way you can get another model of yourself.” Just remember, whatever year’s model you are, you will never be able to get another one. So take care of your mind and body. Above all, they are your most valuable assets.
