Look Hot for Fall without Burning a Hole in Your Wallet

If they haven’t already, September editions of your favorite glossies will be appearing on en masse in checkout lines. Each cover will promise more pages than ever before, all telling you that the last fall’s riding boots won’t suffice and that oxblood is no longer the hot color for fall. As summer in Philly has alternated between torrential downpour and sweltering temperatures, you may be longing for a wardrobe redux but that’s no reason to break the bank! Here are a few tips to help you look hot this fall without burning a hole in your wallet.

  1. Fall is a State of Mind - The season is autumn but many of the summer and spring pieces you already have can be layered and repurposed to create fun looks. Also, let’s face it, it often doesn’t actually cool off fully until October so how many cozy cashmere sweaters do you need to buy in August?

  1. New Does Mean Full Price - Keeping in line with my previous statement. You can probably score a lot of great sales on summer pieces that will take you will into the season. Look for tops in fun colors that will add a pop of fun under your fall sweaters and scarves. Or, you can hold off on fall shopping completely until October when many of the early season offerings are likely to go on sale. Also, your new pieces won’t be sitting in your closet unworn while you wait for temps to drop below sixty degrees!

  1. Know Where to Invest - The financial advisor in me gets nervous talking about looking at clothes as an investment, but there is some truth to the statement. If your coat or boots are looking beat, it may be time to upgrade but know the difference between classics and trends. Black leather boots will always be in style. Feel free to buy a quality pair that will last you a few seasons and weather proof them. Black boots with studs and fringe however are likely a fad, if you “must” have them, shop at Forever 21.

  1. One Woman’s Trash is Another Woman’s Treasure - We all have that friend with the enviable wardrobe and who knows, some of your friends likely feel the same about you! Why not spend an evening doing a clothing and accessory swap? Not only will you get time with your girlfriends without spending money at the bars, you may also find your friend is ready to part with the bag you’ve been secretly coveting!

  1. Find Beauty in What You Have - Finally, while shopping is fun, the change of seasons doesn’t require new clothes. If your closet is already bursting open and nothing in the store windows inspires you, sit out the shopping spree this season. Your wallet will truly thank you!
