5 Ways To Make The Most Of Your Travels Abroad

Have plans to travel to a foreign country? Here’s what I learned in my recent seven-month trip to Asia, where I explored Thailand, Cambodia and the Philippines.

Keep a Journal

I love to write, so this was a no-brainer for me. Be it an online blog or moleskin journal, keeping record of your day-to-day activities is the perfect way to remember all of the little details of your trip. Paste in some pictures, ticket stubs, and other memorabilia, and you have yourself an instant scrapbook!

Be Adventurous

While you may want to spend some time checking out popular attractions, don’t feel confined to just them. There is so much more to see and do, and by trying some things off the beaten path, your travel experience is likely to be much more unique. Speak with locals and expats and ask them what they recommend doing. I ran into some of my favorite restaurants, non-profits, and secluded areas by doing this!

Go with the Flow

Try as you might, it’s nearly impossible for trips to be seamless. When plans fall through, remember that it’s not the end of the world. Sometimes plans go awry, but don’t let that get you down. Take out your journal, scribble down the unfortunate circumstance you’ve found yourself in, and carry-on. There’s no point in putting a damper on an otherwise amazing journey.

Stay on the Move

Don’t get too comfortable in any one place. While it can be nice to stay a few extra days in a city or town that you’ve taken a liking to, don’t forget that there are tons of other places that you have yet to see. That’s not to say that it’s best to rush through your travels. Just be mindful of the obvious; extra time in one place will leave less time in others.

Find time during your travels to give back. Whether it’s volunteering your time, shopping at locally owned stores, or eating at non-profit restaurants, there are always ways you can help make an impact on the communities you’re traveling through.
